Three ethylene-propylene-hexadiene-1,4 terpolymer-based rubbers were s
ubmitted to thermal ageing in the temperature range 110-135 degrees C.
Degradation effects on the rubbers were studied using a direct method
, FTIR spectroscopy, and two indirect methods, dynamic mechanical anal
ysis (DMA) and dielectrical analysis (DEA). The necessary sensitivity
of such methods for the determination of the molecular effects of ther
mal ageing has been clearly illustrated. Changes in the main relaxatio
n peak height allow the thermooxidation to be quantified.
