Studies of the neurochemical pathology of AD have indicated that early
in the course of the disease, abnormalities of relatively few neurotr
ansmitters are obvious. The most reliable and consistent changes are t
hose seen in the cholinergic innervation of the cortex and the cortica
l pyramidal neurones. However, by the time of death there is usually c
onsiderable involvement of other neurones. (C) 1996 Academic Press Lim
