The ever-increasing need for sensors capable of detecting and monitori ng toxic and flammable gases is presented and the various techniques a vailable are introduced. Semiconductor devices based on tin dioxide, w hich potentially have many desirable characteristics, ate discussed in detail with particular reference to the work in Swansea which has Foc used on the problem of selectivity.
