A procedure for determining the temperature field in concentrated slid
ing contacts is developed. Previous solutions for stationary heat sour
ces are reviewed and the effects of motion of the hot spots in the int
ermittent contact of the asperities are discussed. The transient cooli
ng after cessation of heating is examined. A quantitative assessment o
f sliding speed effects on the contact temperature is made. Copyright
