Abstract
The authors examined treatment patterns for two groups of dually diagn osed psychiatric inpatients, those with a) co-occurring, but independe nt mental and substance use disorders (IMD + PSUD); and b) substance-i nduced organic mental disorders (PSUD-OMD). Assessments included the A ddiction Severity? Index for perceived service needs, discharge record s for recommended treatments, and the Quality of Life Interview for fo llow-up treatment utilization. As expected, the groups differed on tre atment patterns. Both received fewer services than needed during the 1 -year follow-up. In particular, the IMD + PSUD patients utilized few s ubstance abuse services and the PSUD-OMD utilized few psychiatric serv ices.
