Abstract
A method has been developed for synthesizing 1-substituted and 1,4-dis ubstituted 2,3-di-O-benzyl-1,6-anhydrogalactofuranoses 16 starting fro m 8, a known 1,6-anhydropyranose prepared from D-galactose. Compounds such as 16 have potential utility for synthesis of the squalestatins a nd zaragozic acids.
