Transcatheter closure of secundum type atrial septal defects is underg
oing extensive clinical evaluation. In this paper, we review the appli
cation of the new Das-Angel Wings occluder device. This device consist
s of two square disks attached in the center via a conjoint ring. Firs
t we review the preselection protocol, based on transesophageal two an
d three-dimensional echocardiography. Then we review the specific devi
ce design, and delivery catheter. To date 24 patients with secundum at
rial septal defect/patent foramen ovale associated with transient isch
emic attacks have undergone closure. The initial results are encouragi
ng, phase I has thus been completed and phase II is about to commence.
