Edge detection is formulated as a curve fitting problem. First, high-g
radient pixels are grouped into elongated regions and then a curve is
fitted to each. The curve fitting method used in this work does not re
quire solving a system of equations, and therefore is fast. Examples o
f edge detection by curve fitting on synthetic and real images are pre
sented, and results obtained are compared with those determined by the
Laplacian of Gaussian operator.
