Well-preserved collagen has been extracted from giant short-faced bear
(Arctodus simus) bones from Alaska. Carbon and nitrogen isotopic abun
dances measured on this organic matter strongly suggest a carnivorous
diet for this extinct bear when compared to those of contemporaneous h
erbivorous and carnivorous species.
