Abstract
To measure the burn history in an inertial confinement fusion experime nt, we have developed a new neutron detector based on plastic scintill ation fibers. Twenty-five fiber scintillators were arranged in a geome try compensation configuration by which the time-of-flight difference of the neutrons is compensated by the transit time difference of light passing through the fibers. Each fiber scintillator is spliced indivi dually to an ultraviolet optical fiber that is coupled to a streak cam era. We have demonstrated a significant improvement of sensitivity com pared with the usual bulk scintillator coupled to a bundle of the same ultraviolet fibers. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.
