Abstract
The anomalous diffraction approximation (ADA) has been recently applie d to interpret measurements of the linear optical dichroism induced by shear in shear-thickening polymer solutions. A conceptual problem in this application is discussed, and a minor modification to the interpr etation is proposed which is concordant with earlier magneto-optic res ults, but retains the correct use of the ADA.
