The distribution of R&D expenditures was examined among the top 200 ac
ademic performers of research between 1980 and 1990 to identify patter
ns and causes of relative change. Although the most prestigious univer
sities registered a significant overall decrease, dispersion did not a
dversely affect academic quality. Medical and ''biomedical'' instituti
ons constituted a special case with different dynamics and had a stron
g propensity to gain research share.
