M. Jahn et G. Spiteller, OXIDATION OF D-(-)-RIBOSE WITH H2O2 AND LIPID HYDROPEROXIDES, Zeitschrift fur Naturforschung. C, A journal of biosciences, 51(11-12), 1996, pp. 870-876
D-(-)-ribose was subjected to oxidation with equimolar amounts of H2O2
/Fe2+ and 13-hydroperoxy-9-cis-11-trans-octadecadienoic acid/Fe2+. Sma
ller carbohydrates, carbonyl compounds hydroxy acids and polyols were
produced. Identification of carbonyl compounds was achieved by trappin
g with pentafluorobenzlylhydroxylamine hydrochloride (PFBHA-HCl). All
products were identified by GC/MS after derivatization with N-methyl-N
-trimethylsilyl-trifluoroacetamide (MSTFA). The reactions were repeate
d with D-[C-13(1)]-ribose in order to reveal the mechanism of oxidatio
n. A possible reaction pathway is outlined starting by removal of hydr
ogens from C-H bonds.
