Observations of a star setting from the Mir space station revealed lay
ered inhomogeneities in the atmosphere at heights of about 52 km with
substantial, mainly positive, temperature gradients. Under the assumpt
ion of the local spherical symmetry of the inhomogeneities, the thickn
ess and temperature gradient of these layers were estimated to range f
rom 50 to 200 m and from -7 to 4 K/100 m, respectively.
