1-Amino-1-deoxypentitols and 1-amino-1-deoxyhexitols were obtained by
electroreduction of the corresponding oximes of D-arabinose, L-arabino
se, D-ribose, D-xylose, D-lyxose, D-glucose, D-mannose, and D-galactos
e. These oximes were prepared in situ by treatment of the respective a
ldoses with hydroxylamine in an acetate buffer of pH from 4 to 6, or d
irectly with hydroxyl-ammonium acetate. The electrolysis was carried o
ut in a divided electrolyzer on a mercury working cathode and an auxil
iary anode separated by a cation-selective membrane.
