In Hungary investigations on the virus diseases of woody plants, inclu
ding grapevine, fruit trees, forest trees and shrubs began to come int
o prominence relatively late, in the 1960s. To our best knowledge the
grapevine is infected by eight nepoviruses, four air-borne viruses and
three so far not exactly identified viruses. In the fruit trees of Hu
ngary 19 virus- and 3 mycoplasma diseases are known, of which seven vi
ruses are properly characterized. From 21 forest tree species and shru
bs 13 viruses have been exactly identified, while in the case of 18 vi
rus infected plants the pathogens have not been identified, or their i
dentification is in process.
