The synergistic effect of a well-known synthetic methylene-dioxyphenyl
compound, piperonyl butoxide (PBO) was investigated on some neuroacti
ve zoocides and insect growth inhibitors during postembryonic developm
ent and adult life of Neobellieria bullata (Dipt., Sarcophagidae) and
Musca domestica (Dipt., Muscidae). PBO has proved to be a good synergi
st of methoprene and permethrin during the larval development of N. bu
llata and has a high synergistic effect on tetramethrin during adult l
ife of M. domestica. Activity of diflubenzuron, fenoxycarb, gamma HCH
and carbofuran was also increased after PBO coadministration. It was c
oncluded that where cyt. P-450 system is involved in the metabolism of
zoocides, PBO has high synergistic effect in cases investigated.
