Sixty-six African-American women were recruited from community and wor
k settings in a large Midwestern city and randomly assigned to one of
two quit smoking groups or a control group. The first quit smoking gro
up received weekly mailings of quit smoking materials for 4 weeks and
periodic telephone support calls from a lay facilitator. The second gr
oup received one-time advice to quit smoking. The control group receiv
ed the intervention at the end of the study. None of the women in any
group quit smoking. Cotinine levels dropped for all three groups from
baseline to 6 weeks and 12 weeks. Number of cigarettes per day dropped
continuously for the two intervention groups but not the control grou
