The effects on analytical chemistry of the banning of the production a
nd use of ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) by the Montreal Protocol o
f Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (1987) are discussed. Attent
ion is given to the concessions made to continued ''laboratory and ana
lytical uses'' of ODSs. Finally, progress made in replacing ODSs by so
lvents of reduced stratospheric ozone-depletion capabilities and by al
ternative methodologies, such as solid-phase extraction, are briefly c
onsidered.
