Two sows and three fattening pigs from four farms in the service area
of the Schwarzenbek Veterinary Ambulatory Clinic were submitted alive
for autopsy. All animals exhibited hind leg paralysis. An encephalomye
lopathy was observed histologically. Infection with porcine enteroviru
s was confirmed serologically in the sows and by culture in the fatten
ing pigs. The serotype could not be determined. The clinical and patho
logical findings are described and discussed with respect to the diffe
rential diagnosis and the previous scientific literature.
