Parameters for the determination of total organic carbon (TOC) in wate
r samples by potentiometric titration and by conductometry were studie
d. The determinations were carried out after oxidation of organic comp
ounds using UV irradiation in the presence of potassium persulfate at
temperature above 50 degrees C. An addition of K2S2O8 greatly accelera
tes the oxidation process. The obtained results were compared to the r
esults obtained after wet mineralization using persulfate as an oxidan
t. The TOC content was determined in different types of natural waters
.
