Abstract
The inhomogeneities of microstructure development during plastic defor mation of ferritic and austenitic stainless steels and copper single c rystals have been studied in detail. The results indicate that the she ar bands formation is the consequence of the activation of a new slip system (or systems) after relatively long time of deformation in initi ally operating slip or twin systems when the well-defined banded struc ture or structure with fine twin lamellae is being formed.
