Amide ions generated from secondary aromatic amines with pK(a) > 21 ar
e readily oxidized by dioxygen in the system KOH+18-crown-6+DMSO at ro
om temperature. It was found that the rate limiting stage of the react
ion is the interaction of dioxygen with amide ions. The rate of the re
action is determined by two main factors, varying in opposite directio
ns: the degree of ionization of the amine and the reactivity of the am
ide ions towards dioxygen.
