Abstract
We present here an overview of the main forces that are shaping the ro le of science and technology in contemporary society It is offered as a contribution to help the business and government community in South Africa, as well as the professional scientist and engineer to engage m ore fully in the debate over the respective issues of 'science and cul ture' and 'science as utility', and to understand better how they migh t respond to the challenges imposed by global trends. We find that the re is no single solution created elsewhere in the world that would fit our unique set of circumstances, and that therefore we have the respo nsibility to develop an appropriate approach as a unique society in th e global village.
