An Arabic version of the Revised Job Descriptive index (including the
Job in General scale) was administered to managers (N = 153) in a larg
e Saudi oil company. Despite the considerable linguistic and cultural
changes involved, the scales remained fairly homogeneous after transla
tion. Observed alphas were: Go-workers,.84; Job in General,.78; Superv
ision,.78; Promotion,.72; Work Itself,.66; and Pay,.64. These initial
findings are promising, but it is clear that additional work will be n
ecessary before the Arabic version achieves the high psychometric stan
dards of the original. Suggestions for improvements are presented.
