With concern growing over the transmission of viral agents through blo
od transfusion, clinicians must also consider the risk that other micr
oorganisms may be transmitted by transfusion. Bacterial contamination
of transfused blood products is a well-recognized source of sepsis. Un
fortunately, bacterial sepsis associated with blood product transfusio
n can be difficult to distinguish from an acute hemolytic reaction. Th
erefore, the clinician must remain alert to the possibility of bacteri
al contamination of blood products whenever a ''transfusion reaction''
is encountered.
