Abstract
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was useful in demonstrating the poste rior mediastinal location of a thyroid mass, as well as its tissue cha racteristics and possible invasion of surrounding structures. MRI show ed an area of hyperintense signal in the center of a large multinodula r goiter; it was poorly differentiated (insular) carcinoma, a rare and aggressive tumor. This imaging technique was also helpful in selectin g the appropriate surgical approach: a cervical rather than a left tho racotomy incision.
