In rats which were injected with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into the
midbrain periaqueductal gray (FAG) and then administered with formald
ehyde into the stomach, Fos-like immunoreactivity was found in tyrosin
e hydroxylase-like immunoreactive neurons in the nucleus tractus solit
arii (NTS) which were retrogradely labeled with HRP. The results indic
ate that catecholaminergic NTS neurons may mediate nociceptive viscera
l information to the PAG.
