Js. Jeong et al., OPTICAL-PROPERTIES OF TE NONLINEAR-WAVES IN PLANAR WAVE-GUIDES WITH 2NONLINEAR BOUNDING LAYERS, Optics communications, 116(4-6), 1995, pp. 351-357
We present optical properties of stationary TE nonlinear guided waves
in a planar waveguide which consists of a linear guiding layer with tw
o nonlinear bounding layers sandwiched between a semi-infinite clad an
d a substrate. The nonlinear dispersion relation of the nonlinear wave
guides is obtained by adopting the nonlinear transfer matrix. The opti
cal properties obtained from these relations include: the power depend
ence of mode indices, the transition of the field maximum location, th
e power distributions, and the behavior of the interface fields. The p
lanar waveguide with self-focusing nonlinear layers shows the optical
bistability of power-dependent mode indices, and the critical powers f
or the optical bistability increase with decreasing thickness of the n
onlinear layers. The power distributions and the interface fields disp
lay the optical bistabilities, similar to those of nonlinear Fabry-Per
ot etalon.
