A 44% reduction in the number of grid points required to solve the sca
lar wave equation using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) metho
d has been made possible by a more accurate finite-difference approxim
ation of the Laplace operator. Neither computation time, accuracy nor
stability is compromised using the proposed algorithm.
