R. Colebunders et al., IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF CARE FOR PERSONS WITH HIV-INFECTION IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA, Tropical and geographical medicine, 47(2), 1995, pp. 78-81
Caring for persons with HIV infection is particularly difficult in res
ource-poor countries. In order to improve the quality of care we first
have to evaluate how such care is Presently organized. We need a bett
er assessment of the needs and demands of persons with HN infection as
well as their families. Care for persons with HIV/AIDS should be dece
ntralized and home-based care in a non-stigmatizing way should be prom
oted. The fight against discrimination of persons with HN should be in
tensified. A lot can be achieved by reorganizing and strengthening exi
sting health care systems, by better listening to patients and familie
s and by promoting solidarity among communities.
