The oxidative addition of the coordinated chloroarene in [(4-RC(6)H(4)
Cl)Mn(CO)(3)][X] (R = H, OCH3; X = PF6, BF4) to [Pd(PPh(3))(4)] procee
ds readily at room temperature to give (6)-[{PdCl(PPh(3))(2)}(4-RC(6)H
(4))(Mn(CO)(3)][X]. P-31{H-1} NMR analysis of these square-planar pall
adium complexes revealed that the phosphorus ligands are cis. In contr
ast to their tricarbonylchromium analogues, these manganese complexes
could not be carbonylated because the electron-withdrawing effect of t
he Mn(CO)(3)(+) moiety is too strong.
