When it was believed that stellar bars were flat structures, the thin
component found in the equatorial plane of the edge-on galaxy NGC 4762
was regarded as the prototype of such flat bars. However, N-body simu
lations have suggested for a long time that bars must be thick. We thu
s propose another interpretation of the flat component which confirms
N-body simulations [5]: the thin central structure may be a merger rem
nant.
