Abstract
The surface modification mechanism with scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is investigated Calculations of a field in a tunneling gap have shown that at small distance between a tip and substrate the system is practically symmetric relative to polarity. The evaluation of a tip a pex temperature has shown that thermal expansion of a tip apex can res ults in short-circuit between a tip and substrate. This can be the rea son for surface modification at the applying of a voltage pulse in STM .
