Smith [Smith, W.J. Pur. Pat. 0 526 252 A1 (1993)] recently announced t
he synthesis of a new, potentially large-pore, low Si:Al zeolite, SUZ-
9, which was synthesized using methyl-1H-benzo[1,2-c:3,4-c':5,6-c'']tr
ipyrrolium, 1. The synthesis of 1 is difficult and requires multiple s
teps. We report the synthesis of SUZ-9 with 2,2',2''-nitrilotris[N,N,N
-trimethylethanaminium hydroxide, 2, under the same conditions Smith u
sed for template 1. Template 2 is readily available, in one step, from
commercial reagents. The SUZ-9 so obtained had 10.5% hexane sorption
at 40 torr at 26 degrees C.
