The effects and benefits of pi stacking in asymmetric synthesis is rev
iewed. Specifically, asymmetric induction achieved with chiral auxilia
ries and chiral catalysts can be enhanced by pi stacking effects, lock
ing one conformation of a reactant preferentially in a given transitio
n state assembly. The evolution of such systems, their application in
synthesis, together with related developments in the held of molecular
recognition will be highlighted.
