Abstract
The concept of thermohaline instability is revised for times shorter t han the effective time of relaxation into diffusion. Using the Cattane o equation for the heat flux, we show that before the establishment of the steady state resistive flow, any secularly unstable element of fl uid will describe a damped oscillatory motion.
