We report the detection of an unidentified, high galactic latitude, ga
mma-ray source (GRO J1753+57) by the COMPTEL instrument onboard the Co
mpton Gamma-ray Observatory. The source was clearly detected during ob
servations in November 1992 and had a flux in the 1-3 MeV band of appr
oximately half that of the Crab. All other observations of this region
by COMPTEL only yield upper limits, or marginal detections, showing t
hat this source is highly variable on a timescale of weeks. Possible c
ounterparts are discussed.
