N. Tsukamoto, ARGUMENT ON PLASTIC GEARS FOR POWER TRANSMISSION, JSME international journal. Series C, dynamics, control, robotics, design and manufacturing, 38(1), 1995, pp. 1-8
First, I introduced various kinds of plastics, showed relationships be
tween the relative prices of the principal ones and their heat resista
nt temperatures, and described various characteristics of plastics, ta
king the examples of polyamide (nylon) and polyacetal, which are commo
nly used plastic gear materials. Subsequently, I studied the dynamic b
ehavior of plastic teeth, which is not observed in metal teeth and is
related to the viscoelastic properties of plastics, and described vari
ous phenomena such as the temperature distribution on the tooth profil
e, the change in the tooth profile, the recess (groove) occurring near
the pitch point, and breakage of the tooth, which are problems of pla
stic gears.
