S. Nativi et al., A DISTRIBUTED MULTIMEDIA INFORMATION-SYSTEM DESIGNED FOR THE ARNO PROJECT, ISPRS journal of photogrammetry and remote sensing, 50(1), 1995, pp. 12-22
The architecture of a multimedia information system, based on the Clie
nt-Server paradigm, is described. The system is conceived in order to
collect, share and efficiently manage spatial remotely sensed multi-se
nsor images and ground data, spread over a network. Graphical workstat
ions assure system access through the communication network. Even if t
his paper refers to a specific application, the system architecture em
bodies some concepts that are demonstrated to be convenient for the de
velopment and integration of information systems in spatial informatio
n sciences, as well as for the evolution of photogrammetric and remote
sensing applications. Such architecture will be described referring t
o the implementation of an integrated, hydrogeological and meterologic
al database, collecting multisensor and multispectral data related to
meteorological events. The database installations may be remotely acce
ssed by meteorologists, geologists, hydrologists etc., from a graphica
l workstation through a specifically designed graphical user interface
, in a distributed system configuration. The system allows users to qu
ery, to see, to understand and to obtain sequences of heterogeneous an
d multimedia data.
