This study assessed the clinical applications of an osteocalcin assay
performed with four commercial kits in various patient groups, The dat
a obtained with three kits show the possibility of distinguishing betw
een normal young women, healthy premenopausal women, and postmenopausa
l women with a significant bone loss. One of the kits is able to show
variations in serum osteocalcin levels after dialysis in patients with
chronic renal failure, Serum osteocalcin assays appear to be a valid
method for evaluating osteoporosis if the proper antibodies are used.
