Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is a frequent complication in immunoc
ompromised patients. The role of the prolonged use of steroids in pred
isposing to invasive aspergillosis has been recognized, but exceptiona
lly described in asthmatic patients. We report the case of a 59-year-o
ld woman with bronchial asthma treated with steroid therapy for a long
time, who developed an invasive pulmonary aspergillosis with an unusu
al combination of invasive and allergic disease. It seems reasonable t
o think that allergic disease due to allergic bronchopulmonary aspergi
llosis (ABPA) preceded the terminal invasive process. Adjunctive thera
py with antifungal agents in patients with ABPA is considered, since t
here is the risk of an invasive pulmonary aspergillosis.
