Rj. Bonenberger et Jw. Dally, ON IMPROVEMENTS IN MEASURING CRACK-ARREST TOUGHNESS, International journal of solids and structures, 32(6-7), 1995, pp. 897-909
A new specimen is described for determining fracture toughness of meta
ls in a more cost effective manner. The chevron-notched crack arrest (
CNCA) specimen is a hybrid design which allows measurement of K-1a and
K-1c from a single specimen. Both finite element analyses and a compl
iance experiment are used to relate K to strains and crack mouth openi
ng, as measured by strain and clip gages, respectively. Fracture exper
iments using the CNCA specimen on A533-B reactor grade steel are discu
ssed.
