Abstract
A new specimen is described for determining fracture toughness of meta ls in a more cost effective manner. The chevron-notched crack arrest ( CNCA) specimen is a hybrid design which allows measurement of K-1a and K-1c from a single specimen. Both finite element analyses and a compl iance experiment are used to relate K to strains and crack mouth openi ng, as measured by strain and clip gages, respectively. Fracture exper iments using the CNCA specimen on A533-B reactor grade steel are discu ssed.
