An application of risk assessment and management in geotechnical engin
eering associated with overburden excavation in surface strip coal min
es is presented. A risk-assessment technique is proposed for analysis
of the causative components of events that lead to destabilization of
the dragline. These hazard events are introduced and, through an analy
sis of a combined risk profile comprising such events, a technique is
then proposed whereby an expert system is used with mine block data to
manage and predict the risk of dragline-bench instability for specifi
c mining locations.
