A comparative study on the extraction of 16 polynuclear aromatic hydro
carbons (EPA priority pollutants) from urban atmospheric particulates
was conducted employing the Soxhlet and the ultrasonic technique with
various solvents. Ultrasonic extraction using acetonitril appeared to
meet most requirements since it combined high recovery rates for most
PAHs with simplicity in use. The extraction procedure was optimized re
garding the duration of sonication, the solvent amount and the number
of extraction treatments.
