We have studied the damping capacity of porous titanium nickelide powd
er on a laboratory apparatus designed for vibration of materials under
steady-state forced oscillation conditions. We have established the d
ependence of the damping capacity on the porosity and the magnitude of
the applied force. By comparing tests ofporous titanium and titanium
nickelide, we show that the latter has better damping characteristics.
We hypothesize two levels of damping in titanium nickelide: interpart
icle and lattice.
