We study the behavior of optical pulses propagating in optical fibers
possessing periodical gain profiles which do not satisfy the adiabatic
amplification conditions. We demonstrate that it is possible to obtai
n first and higher order soliton solutions, and we predict their final
asymptotic amplitudes and widths as well as some of their transient c
haracteristics. These predictions agree with results of numerical simu
lations and allow to describe the global behavior of optical fiber dev
ices that use periodical gain profiles, such as high gain doped fiber
amplifiers.
