The challenge of health care reform is driving the development of new
and innovative solutions to the question of how to provide quality, co
st-effective care that is satisfying to patients. Case management offe
rs an opportunity to facilitate a childbearing experience for the pati
ent and family that meets these goals. This article describes the deve
lopment and implementation of an obstetric case management pilot proje
ct in a large academic medical center and the lessons learned in the f
irst year of operation. The design of the pilot program is presented.
Patient education and care coordination were the case management activ
ities most valued by patients and physicians alike. Initial strategic
planning for the second year of operation is also presented.
