The site-specific natural abundance deuterium distribution of 2-phenyl
ethanol (1) and 2-phenylethyl acetate (2) obtained through a variety o
f methods has been determined by H-2 NMR spectroscopy. This technique
provided a means of distinguishing between ''natural'' materials isola
ted from natural sources or obtained by biodegradation of L-phenylalan
ine and other products of petrochemical origin or obtained from natura
l L-phenylalanine through nonenzymic controlled chemical processes.
