Abstract
The K2TiF6 salt required for the production of Al-Ti and Al-Ti-B maste r alloys was synthesised in the laboratory and the dissociation behavi our of K2TiF6 and KBF4 salts at different temperatures was studied. An investigation was carried out of the mode of reaction of the salts wi th aluminium. The salts were found to react with aluminium directly wi thout undergoing dissociation. The K2TiF6 salt reacts with aluminium o nly when the aluminium is molten, while the KBF, salt reacts with soli d aluminium. In the presence of KBF4, the reaction between K2TiF6 and aluminium takes place below the melting point of aluminium. (C) 1996 T he Institute of Materials.
